-
Remove the Stock shift knob by turning counter-clock wise.
-
Remove the dash piece that is holding the shift-boot. There
are two clips underneath the cover, so remember to find those
if they pop off.
-
Raise the car and use JACK STANDS, just don't use the lamer
jack that came with the car.
-
Make sure you have enough clearance from the side so you can
get under!
-
Remove the bolts to the Cat Back, and pull the muffler back,
so it seperates at the y-pipe. Remember to keep the gaskets
-
Remove the heat shield, it's right above the Catalyst Coverter,
There should be 5 10mm bolts/screws
-
The control rod should be exposed now. Remove the bolt holding
in the shifter, use TWO socket drivers on each side, i think
they are 14mm and 16mm (?)
-
There are two 8mm bolts, supporting the shifter support assembly,
Remove the bolts and keep in safe place.
-
From inside the car, pull the support assembly UP through the
rubber holder. TURN the stock shifter slightly, so that it can
clear the hole.
-
Push down on the shifter from the support assembly, and the
shifter should pop free, along with a circular rubber seal and
two plastic pieces over the pivot ball. Remove everything from
the stock shifter. NOTE how they were before.
-
Put the new STS in, remembering to LUBE the damn ball with
some grease and put it back into the support assembly.
-
Push the support assembly through the rubber sealer and align
it's two bolts so that you can reattach the bolts from UNDERNEATH
the car.
-
Reattach the bolts from underneath the car. TUG a bit on the
SPRING on the control rods, so that the shifter can have some
free movement. give it a good tug.. Reattach the control rod
with the STS, make sure the STS is facing the right way.
-
Now, with the heat shield, give it a few good WHACKS, with
a hammer, or rock, or whatever, to make an indention,so that
the STS will not hit it. Since the sts's fulcrum was shifted
UP, the bottom of the shifter now sits lower. After a few trial
and error runs, making sure the sts can freely move with the
heat shield is on, put back the shield with the 5 bolts.
-
Put back the RT, remembering the gaskets and bolts.
-
From inside the car, replace the dash piece, shiftboot.. (you
may shorten the shift boot by inverting it and moving the ring
up the boot)
-
Attach new shift knob or your old one.
-
The new shifter will be stiffer to shift, but the throw is
shorter!
-
Clean up!
-
Test the shifting on a test run!
