This mod was performed by Brian Won. He deserves all credit for these instructions. However, he and Southeast Maxima Group are not liable for your actions. These instructions are more for a guide, not "true" instructions.

Tools needed:

  • Socket wrench set
  • Jack stands or ramps
  • Liquid wrench, a.k.a. Lock-Tight
  • Long flat head screw driver
  • WD40
  • Anti-Seize grease
  • Universeral Pivot Exentensions, 6 or 10 inch lengths
  • Open ended wrench- 10 and 12mm.
  • o2 sensor plug (for 95-98 maximas only)
  • Possibly a Dremel or Rotorary tool.

SPECIAL NOTE: If you have extra $$ lying around, why not change out your old o2 sensors? REMEMBER, after you're done installing the ypipe. Besure to remove one terminal to the battery to RESET your ecu :)

Install:

  1. Jack the Car up on jack stands, make sure there is enough clearance to get under the car from the front and sides.

  2. Remove the bolts from the catalyst converter, Two 14mm bolts. Remove the Rubber hangers holding up the ypipe. Make sure the ypipe doesn't smack you in the head after it's free. Have your friend pull your muffler, so to separate the Cat from the Ypipe. They might by rusty to apply liquid wrench if needed. A gasket will pop out, keep it if you didn't get a new one from Stillen.

  3. Now, let's remove the bolts from the two pre-cats. For the one near the FRONT of the car, the bolts are hard to get to, spray some WD40 on them, and use the extension to get to the 14mm bolts.. You'll need to use a 14mm DEEP socket, by the way. HEAVE like a mofo until all three are off. Keep the bolts in a safe place, you'll need them later.

  4. For the second precat, NISSAN really did some magic tricks. those bolts are practically impossible to get to, unless you are Gumbi or have those universal pivot joints. Spray WD40 on the bolts, wait a few moments, then heave your way to a few new bruises. Keep the bolts in a safe place.

  5. Now, after the 6 bolts are off, DO NOT take off the two 14mm support bolts, that is now holding the stock ypipe up. Let's go unhook the o2 sensor connections, shall we? We need to do this, in order to get some slack to take off the o2 sensors that are on the stock ypipe.

  6. The two o2 connectors are GREY in color and are located on TOP of the engine bay. One is near the A/C tubes, on the passenger side, about six inches from the strut mounts. It's inverted, so you'll need to pop off the connection, and using the LONG flat head screw driver, pop off ALL the connectors that are holding in the wire. it's a pain in the ass, but this has to be done, in order to get some slack. The other connections is on the right side of the engine valve cover, near the "TWIN CAM 24VALVE" words. You'll have to unplug it, and then unclip those annoying clips holding the wire in. Once you get all the clips off, chuck the o2 wire down to the bottom of the car, or just give enough slack on the bottom.

  7. Once you have the needed slack, it's time to remove the stock ypipe for good. it's a little heavy so have your friend get underneath the car to help hold it up. Remove the two 14mm bolts that are supporting the ypipe up. Once you get those off, the ypipe will drop, along with 2 crush rings. carefully lower it and using a 22mm open wrench, remove the o2 sensors from the pipe. becareful not to bust the damn things.

  8. From underneath the car, you'll see a little black metal piece that was used to hold the stock ypipe in, remove it, by removing a 10mm bolt, you won't need these pieces.

  9. If you have a 99 or 2000 maxima, just plug in the o2 sensors with the antiseize, then put the NEW crush rings in and strap the new ypipe in.

  10. If you have a 95-98 maxima, put in the o2 sensors, with the antiseize, along with the o2 sensor plug on the main downpipe. you'll need to first, put on the second pre-cat on the new pipe first, but don't TIGHTEN it yet. Put the crush rings in the right places and put the ypipe in. tighten the SUPPORT bolt (14mm) in first, so you won't have to hold the ypipe. Once thats in, use the entension and put eveything in it's place. One the tops of the pre-cats are locked in, tighten the bolts on the small down pipe to the large down pipe and tighten all equally first, to get a good seal with the crush rings. Note: If the smaller down pipe doesn't fit right, use the Dremel to grind down the inside of the pipe.

  11. Tighten all the bolts on the ypipe. Reattach the ypipe HOLDER (with the rubber connectors) to the ypipe and attach the Y to the cat. DON'T forget the gasket!

  12. Reattach the o2 sensor connections from the top of the engine bay, reconnect all the clips.

  13. Clean up, and make sure everything is back in place.

  14. Start the car, and check for leaks. Is there any gases extruding from the cat? ypipe? If so, turn off car and retighten.

  15. Check again, if you see some burning smoke, it's ok. It's from the anti-seize grease burning off. Then you're set.

  16. Test run! WOW. doesn't that feel great?!?!

  17. Done.
